Diode Laser – Single-Emitter

Micro-optics for single-emitter diode lasers—precise collimation and controlled beam shaping for laser systems with stable output power

Single-emitter diode lasers are among the key light sources in modern laser technology and are used both directly in industrial applications and as pump sources for solid-state and fiber lasers. They combine high electro-optical efficiency with compact designs and a precisely adjustable wavelength.

Single-emitter diode lasers are characterized by a highly elliptical beam profile with significantly different divergences along the fast axis and slow axis. To achieve efficient beam guidance, high focusability, and stable system performance, precisely tuned micro-optical collimation and beam shaping are essential. In applications such as welding, soldering, surface treatment, or additive manufacturing, single-emitter diode lasers thus serve as an efficient and precise energy source.

Optical Requirements for Single-Emitter Diode Lasers

The raw emission profile of single-emitter diodes is typically asymmetric and multimodal and therefore deviates from an ideal Gaussian beam. Through the targeted use of micro-optics (e.g., FAC/SAC collimators), the laser beam becomes technically usable: The beam geometry remains elliptical, and the intensity distribution exhibits an elliptical top-hat (FAC) or a multimodal profile (SAC), while the divergence is significantly reduced. With additional optics (e.g., beam shaping, fiber coupling), a nearly circular, homogenized beam can be generated.

The asymmetric beam profile requires precise FAC/SAC collimation to ensure a uniform, application-optimized beam distribution.
High power densities require thermally stable optics (geometry, substrate, coatings) with high LIDT resistance.
Precise FAC/SAC collimation and targeted beam shaping are critical for coupling efficiency, focusability, and reliable downstream processing.
Industrial applications require optical parameters that remain stable under temperature fluctuations and continuous operation, and are reproducible in volume production.
